We
have made progress with regard to early detection,
treatment and services. The death rate
is down slightly while the incidence of breast
cancer continues to grow. Our researchers
need funding to take the monster to task. Here
are the reasons why …
Breast Cancer Statistics
in the United States - 2006
Every
two minutes a woman in the
United States is diagnosed
with breast cancer.
In
2006, an estimated 213,000
new cases of invasive breast
cancer will be diagnosed,
along with 58,000 new cases of
non-invasive breast cancer.
In
2006, 41,430 people will die
from breast cancer in the United
States alone;
40,970 women, 460 men.
Of
the new cases during 2006,
1720 of them will represent
men. Men have a far lower
incidence of breast cancer but
a much higher death rate.
Breast
cancer is the leading cancer
among white and African American
women.
African American women are more
likely to die from this disease.
Breast
cancer incidence in women has
increased
from one in twenty in 1960 to one
in seven today.
